Description & Operating Principle

HMEC’s Automatic Dry Powder Vial Inspection Machine addresses the unique optical challenges associated with inspecting dry injectable powders and lyophilized biologics. Unlike liquid injectables where particulate matter can be agitated into a vortex, dry powders cling to container glass surfaces and can obscure underlying glass cracks or moisture ingress.

The machine conveys filled and sealed sterile vials via precision infeed starwheels to an inspection carousel. Vials are held in cushioned polyurethane cradles and gently tilted to 45Β° and 90Β° angles while rotating under high-lumen angled backlights and polarized darkfield illuminators. This controlled rolling action exposes the entire powder cake surface without generating airborne dusting. High-contrast mirrors and magnifying optics provide clear views of the vial shoulder, neck finish, side walls, base concavity, and aluminum flip-off crimp seal.

Target Products & Applications

Dedicated inspection for dry injectable dosage forms and sensitive biologics:

πŸ’Š Cephalosporin & Penicillin Powders

Sterile antibiotic powder vials, inspecting for powder clumps, burnt particles, and glass chips.

❄️ Lyophilized (Freeze-Dried) Biologics

Vaccines, peptides, and monoclonal antibody lyophilized cakes, detecting melt-back and collapse.

πŸ§ͺ Oncology & High-Potency Powders

Cytotoxic injectables requiring 100% container closure integrity and leak-free crimping.

🍼 Dry Syrup Pediatric Formulations

Glass and PET bottles filled with reconstitution powder, checking fill line and glass integrity.

Pros & Cons Comparison

βœ… Advantages (Pros)

  • Optimized Powder Dynamics: Smooth multi-axis tilting rotates powder without atomizing it into internal clouds.
  • 360Β° Glass & Crimp Inspection: Exposes sub-visible hairline fractures at the neck, shoulder, and base heel.
  • Zero Glass Stress: Non-marking Delrin and polyurethane contact parts prevent micro-fractures in sterile glass vials.
  • High-Speed Throughput: Continuous rotary indexing handles speeds from 100 up to 250 vials per minute.
  • Fail-Safe Reject Diverter: Non-conforming vials are gently diverted without shattering or product spillage.

⚠️ Considerations & Limitations (Cons)

  • Dedicated Powder Calibration: Specifically configured for dry powder and lyo cakes, not optimized for free-flowing liquids.
  • Format Starwheels: Requires starwheel change parts when transitioning between different vial body diameters.

Vial Format Change Parts

When switching between vial diameters (e.g. 5ml to 20ml/50ml), the following change parts are utilized:

  • Infeed Timing Screw: Matched to vial outer diameter and pitch.
  • Infeed & Inspection Starwheels: CNC-machined nylon/Delrin starwheels with padded pockets.
  • Tilting Cradles: Gripper pads sized to container height and body radius.
  • Discharge Chute: Formatted guide tracks for smooth container handoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is dry powder inspection different from liquid inspection?

A: Liquid inspects via liquid vortex spinning. In dry powder, rapid spinning would aerosolize powder and cover all glass walls with dust. Instead, the vial is gently tilted and rolled so the powder moves as a cohesive cake, revealing hidden glass cracks and cake discolorations.

Q: Can it detect aluminum flip-off crimp deformities?

A: Yes. As the vial rotates 360 degrees, the crimp skirt and flip-off plastic button are fully visible to check for missing buttons, uneven skirt crimping, or loose seals.

Q: Is it suitable for lyophilized cake products?

A: Yes. It is specially designed to inspect lyophilized products for cake collapse, melt-back, shrinkage, and moisture coloration.
